Proposal

Aims

My main aim for the documentary is to find out first hand how sleep deprivation effects people, and mainly young teenage people. The main reason for this is because they are the people who stay up the latest and get up for school not soon after. The aim to show the 16-24 year olds that sleep is very important and by showing them real footage of someone going without sleep to the extreme it would help open their eyes to the problems of only have a couple of hours sleep each night.

Content

There are 3 main areas the content will be focusing in, the expert interview where i will go to experts to get reliable and more believable information on sleep deprivation and how it can be help though psychological nursing and chemical nursing. The next section would be the largest portion of the documentary  that would be the study itself. I plan to have a huge amount of footage to pick out from to use for the documentary to ensure progression is shown day by day. I will also include numerous mini interviewer lasting a sentence or a phrase, just to get outsiders opinions on the situation as well as inside information from people who are around the Sleep Deprivation people. The last section would be the introduction and conclusion of the study and documentary as a whole. I would warn the viewers of all the content in the show such as strong language and scene that could be viewed as unpleasant, as well as giving a good intro to why I'm doing the study (the Aim section above) and the conclusion i get out of it. Multiple warnings will be displayed not to try what i am doing at home.

Target audience

My main target audience is 16-24 year olds who watch BBC3. I will be keeping to this group from the brief entirely as the cast from the documentary are all between 15-19 with the exceptions of parents and the experts. The study will be carried out by people of the same age as the target audience ensuring the have a connection to the participants and the reason behind the study to explain to the target audience that, although work from school and university is important, so is sleep and it is critical to stay on top of it. The audience are male and female as the participants are 1 male and 1 female. I did this on purpose so that the different genders can be observed differently as well as giving the target audience a choice from what person they have more relation to.

Format

The mode i will be using is Obervational and Performative as i will focus the documentary mainly around myself, the presenter. As i will take part in the study and i will be being observed during the procedure.  By having the participant and I doing video logs it makes the footage more interactive than if it wad purely observational. I plan to use observation when a message or segment i can look back at is shown such as a phone call being recored where i just let the call play with graphics reading out what is being said.

Genre

This is going to be a documentary that focuses very deeply on a study. This is done as interviews will be shown though out the documentary to give facts as documentaries do as well as providing a narrative that is based on facts and figures, usually finding something out. For my documentary i am trying to find out and prove that sleep is important by not sleeping. Having a clear narrative will ensure the documentary is clear to the audience.

Style

The start of the documentary will start with a warning annotation, very similar to jackass's where i will explain that strong language is used and that it should not be copied at home or anywhere else.
Jackass Warning message at start
and end of each episode & movie.

Once this is announce i will start the documentary by explaining the narrative and what i have already put myself though as i plan to record all the footage that is not directly linked to the study after the study has be carried out. This ensures that i am fine after the study but i can explain from experience what happens. I would have graphics under myself when first introducing myself as well as every character in the documentary giving them their title relevant to the project as well as their name.  i would use a dark royal blue that is transparent slightly to use as the banner of the labels with a clock at the left side of it. This template of a label will be used for the vast majority of titles. When i introduce the aim of the project i will then show the interviews with the experts so the audience can understand what is happening during the study when unusual things may occur.
The interview will be very professional and serious like any new report interview with a high ranking member of a company. I will do this to make sure this section of the documentary is serious so the audience understands that the information given is important and could benefit them and be important later on in the documentary. I would have very faint music in the background that is instrumental to keep the engagement of the viewer up without losing the seriousness of the situation.
The interview will end with a mentioning to the study such as "good luck" or a statement that would smoothly link in to the start of the study.

I would make the study displayed similar to BigBrother (shown in the video at 12:45) as i would have a graphic in the bottom left or top left corner stating the time in digital with an analog clock next to it with the day underneather. Big brother does similar as they display the time and mention the situation with a voice over. I plan to use a voice over when necessary to explain what is going on as i will most likely explain what is happening the first couple of days in the video logs. Each clip will be fade in and out at the beginning and end to give it a smooth transition to the real clips.  To split the study up it will up between the two participants with a large amount of cut aways to keep the documentary engaging and lively. No music would be played unless it suits the situation very well such as if a song was related to what was being said in a video. The footage recorded would be mainly hand held as the video logs will be done by the participants themselves and the camera language professional standard will most likely drop during the study as the participants will be less focused and struggle to use the camera properly. This is not a bad thing as it shows the development of the study. But to ensure good footage is filmed i will have the participants monitored most of the time during the day by another person so they can film them with good camera language. On the third day of the sleep deprivation the friends of the participants will spend a fairly long time with them giving me a good moment to make a montage of the day with multiple burst interview statements from the friends on their opinions.
When the study is over i will go though the study showing brief moments of it that was perviously shown, to back up the statement. This conclusion may also involve an expert checking in with me at the start and end of the study to show the difference in cognitive changes. After the documentary has finished i will once again fade in and out the Warning message, stating they should not try what had be shown in the documentary at home.

Emails and Phone Calls to Contributors

1- Hollie Wollaston (participant)

I rang Hollie to ask her if when she would be able to do the documentary as she is a close friend who i can rely on and i told her i was aiming to do the recording of the 5 days without sleep between the 10th to the 20th maximum. So i would need to start the 5 days by at least the 15th of June. She said that her school exams will end on the 9th of June so she is happy to partake in the study and we agreed that she can drop out of it anytime if she feel ill or incapable of staying up any longer.

2- John Calvert (participant + Friend of participants [get opinion] )

When i was taking to John Calvert on the phone i asked him if he was happy to partake in a study where he will not sleep for the goal of 5 days, but he can drop out any time he feels like during the period of time. He was happy to partake but asked when i would be doing the study due to his 6th form exams. I mentioned i was aiming between the 10th to 15th june to start filming. He said that he would be unable to partake due to focusing on his exams that will not finish until the end of June. John did ask if he could do a could of cognitive testing on me and the other testy to track the effects of sleep deprivation as he is doing psychology for A-level and it would be useful for him as well as extra, backup, footage for me. We agreed that he will do the cognitive testing as well as spending one of the days with me

3- Alice Golding (Friend of participants [get opinion] )

I asked Alice if she would be happy being interviewed a few times during the sleep depravation study about how it is like to be around people who have not slept. Also i added that i would like her to spend a fairly large amount of time with the people doing the study but not partake due to child protection laws. She was happy to do a couple of interviews to give her opinion on the study and she is very close to the participants so it will not be a problem to spend time with them. I will also need to get written consent of the parents to ensure i am following any laws that could be breached from having a minor in the documentary. I will obtain this written evidence closer to the date of production.

4- Aridam Kumar (GP)

5- Jillian Wollaston (Nurse)

When i phoned up Jillian we discussed that topic and what i would like to get out of the documentary. She agreed that she would try to keep space for the interview but would like to have a meeting booked at a closer time incase of unexpected situations come up. For a rough date we agreed the 18th June at her house. She explained that he does not have the most in-depth knowledge of sleep deprivation but would still be able to explain the majority of my questions.

6-Chadwell Heath Doctors (Grove Road)

7- Prof. Colin Espie (Clinical and Scientific Director of sleep studies)

8- Dr. Simon Kyle (Expert Adviser on sleep)

9-  The London Sleep Centre

When i contacted the London Sleep Centre they first wanted to know the details of my study and what their involvement would be. I told them i was making a documentary for A-level media about sleep and would like to have an interview with any of the stuff to get an inside opinion on the topic. the receptionist said that they only see people for the therapy and would have to book an appointment. I then told them that i would not be able to because i am not in need for the therapy session and i do not have the funds to pay for one. I then asked if i could talk to one of the experts now to see if i could interview them in their free time but the reception repeated again to me that they only can book appointments. I thanked them for their time and they then hung up. I will not be able to get an interview with the London Sleep Centre.

10- Jacqui Farrants (Therapists from The House Partnership)

This is a screenshot of the message system on The House Partnership Website

11- Sharon Eden (therapist)

12- Michelle Simpson

I did not need to ring up or email Michelle as i live with her. She agreed that she would allow me to interview her serval times during the study to give a mothers opinion on what i am setting out to do and how she thinks it has effected me. As a parent she would know my usual behaviour patten quite well therefore she is a good person to get interviews about my own behaviour change.

13- Darren Simpson

I did not need to ring up or email Michelle as i live with her. He agreed that she would allow me to interview him serval times during the study to give a fathers opinion on what i am setting out to do and how he thinks it has effected me. As a parent they would know my usual behaviour patten quite well therefore are good people to get interviews about my own behaviour change.

14- Sophie Roberts (Friend of participants [get opinion] )

Sophie is good friend of both myself and Hollie Wollaston (the other participant of the study) Sophie agreed that she could come round to see us at least one day of the study as she is not busy between the 10th-20th of June too much and would sort out a day to come round with the other friends of mine and hollies as it would allow a group opinion of the study from different viewing angles. Bethany was with Sophie at the time of the phone call therefor she also agreed to the same terms.

15- Bethany Hall (Friend of participants [get opinion] )

When asking Sophie Roberts Bethany Hall was also there allowing me to ask her though Sophie, saving time. She agreed to the same conditions as Sophie and would be happy to come to my house one day of the study to just have a normal "relaxing time with friends" as quoted by myself during the phone call. and have a small interview to explain her opinion on the topic.

16- James Golding (Friend of participants [get opinion] )

James said that he would be able to spend some time during the study with me but might not be able to come the same day the other people may arrive. i told him it quite important to have them all there at the same time as it gives a more real felling to the event than just having him round. He then said on the phone, "well i'll see, I most likely will be able to come but i can promise anything." I then said thanks and explain about the short 1min interview and we ended the called agreeing on all terms and putting him down as a maybe of coming to the gathering of friends.

17-  SleepMed Inc. (experts on sleep)

18- Toby Wollaston (Hollies Brother)

When talking to Toby though hollies phone i asked him if he would be willing to give me a short video log, himself explaining how she has changed at home, or have an interview about it with the camera man and the person i would ask to be the Interviewer while I'm doing the study. He seemed very interested and agreed to the request. I told him i would ask him closer to the time as well to make sure he is still up for having the interview.

19- Grandparents (Evelyn & Ray)

When i told them about the project they where not too happy about the idea as it could be very dangerous and they are worried about me. I told them that i got everything under control and that i have organised people to stay with me the majority of the time period i will be taking part in the test and that i would not force myself to the point of major damage. They said they would be ok with the interview if i need it but are worried in the behalf of my health. I ensured them i have everything under control in a stable environment and will most likely send one of my friends ground (most likely alice as they know her well) to do the interview as i would not be in the best shape to be presenting an interview.

Analyzing the competition

Embarrassing Bodies

This example is called Embarrassing bodies, from Channel 4. It is shown on 4seven at 10:00pm and again on 4more at 11:15pm but mainly airs on Channel 4 on Tuesdays at 8:00pm. The viewing figures for the show in the past week on its main channel, Channel 4 are, 1,290,000 views. This is a huge amount of views for any TV show and mainly has this many due to the channel it is broadcasted on as well as the content of the show itself.

This show is similar to my own as we both focus on the topic of health and medical based advice. The show Embarrassing bodies is about multiple people from the public coming onto the show to see the doctors there to get advice over the embarrassing abnormalities on their bodies. This makes the show seem very personal to the views as members of the public are used. Although this would make the audience feel more connected it might not feel as real as my pro formative mode documentary as i plan to have myself and another person as the topics on the situation, filming ourselves without sleep on hourly intervals. This may also incorporate opinions from others who are effected by the outcome such as family members of mine and my other host. Embarrassing bodies uses a lot of factual sources though out the show and does not give much opinion and uses experts to give trustworthy facts consistently such as at 5:17 of the video shown above. I don't really want my documentary to rely on facts although i do aim to get a segment at the start very similar to this where a doctor will explain the risks, problems and solutions i will and could face during the experiment. This would make my documentary seem much more legitiment and believable as i would be taking part in the situations. Embarrassing bodies only focus on the curing of the problem instead of the way the got the problem too. I plan in my own documentary to focus on filming myself at the start of the experiment all the way though the duration, giving a clear change when i go though the multiple days without sleep. This show uses a lot of graphics with diagrams and words to show the facts of the topic. At 4:00 it uses graphics to explain Endometiosis as well as using a voice over that does most of the explaining. The reason they do this is to keep the viewer engaged during the explanation as well as making a clearer image of the topic. I will be uses very little graphics during my documentary as it would take away the raw footage feel of having a video log every couple of hours during the experiment. I will uses graphics to label the doctor interview as well as the time of each Video log made. This would mostly be done in the bottom left corner of the screen with a clock showing the time with the time in digital shown next to it. I think my show could beat this show in ratings as although both shows will focus on real people and no acting, I feel mine is more compelling to watch as you can see the presenter suffer to endure the situation as personally i think people would find someone going though a difficult challenge more entertaining than people admitting to their embarrassing parts of their bodies. Realistically my should would not be very likely to beat the viewing figures of Embarrassing bodies as it has 1,290,000 views and is aired on a major channel. BBC3 is where i am airing my documentary and BBC3's top viewing figures of the week are 1,187,000 views. It not much of a difference but it very unlikely to beat my own channels most viewed program by over 100 thousand.

MAN V. FOOD (TUE 2032) Dave Ja Vu 87,000 views
Man V. Food is a show based upon a man who set himself a challenge of eating the most ridiculous feasts he can find in america. This show is shown on Dave, but has it highest rating on Dave Ja Vu where it reaches 87,000 views in the past week. It is shown on Dave Ja Vu at 8:32pm. Dave Ja Vu reruns what was shown on Dave in the past hour, meaning it was shown on Dave at 7:32pm.
Man V. Food is not completely linked into my own documentary as Man V. Food is about the food industry while mine is about sleeping and health. The role i linked these together is they both are putting themselves in a dangerous situation to get entertainment to the viewer. My documentary defiantly takes  more serious and darker approach as Man V. Food is purely to entertain the audience instead of giving them much information. The only information the show ever gives about the food is what is in it, how much is in it and where it is from. The Camera language of Man V. Food is very professional with a full staff of camera operators being around to film each event. This makes the show very professional and allows the audience to se the facial expression when the host put himself though the struggling size of foods he eats. My show would not be so professional as the cameras used for my documentary will be easy access camera that would be hand held or resting on a surfaces while i talk to it explaining how i feel or recording my actions. This would make my documentary feel much more real than Man V. Food or at least have a more drastic impact instead of a entertainment impact that i personally think is makes the show more compelling to watch as it has more drama. These would be my main up goal to this show as i believe as my show would be more compelling and contain more realism that would enhance the dramatisation of the show which would make more viewers watch my show that would be show at roughly the same time as Man V. Food. I also notice that the show uses a lot of background music that i would stay clear from as it takes away from the raw footage of the sleepless nights and days. It makes the situation less serious and more entertaining then real.

HOSPITAL SYDNEY (SERIES 7B) (WED 2200)

I could not find a video online of the show but i did find a TV schedule for the show. I watched an episode i could find running on TV and have used my knowledge from watching the show to explain how i feel my documentary relates and would beat the show in ratings.

The show Hospital Sydney is shown on a small channel called Discovery Home and Health at 10pm on a Wednesday. It come in with a total of 31,000 views and is the top rating views on the channel in the past week.

Both Hospital Sydney and my own idea are about health and show in a real environment what happens. Both the show demonstrate realism in a very justifying way as I plan to make my documentary compelling to other not to attempt doing the same experiment i went though and explain the danger of it. Hospital Sydney does the same as getting the doctors to explain that is going on during the procedures and have real footage of sugary, giving the audience a real feel for what the environment is like and how the people must feel being in the room during the operation. An example from the show is shown in the picture above where you can see the team of doctors being suited up for the operation and it gives the audience a sense of realism and hard hitting truth of what is going on. I plan to do the same as i will be showing the audience the hosts going though a tough state where it will most likely have at least a slightly bad effect on their physical and possible emotional well being. The camera language of Hospital Sydney is mostly professional when interviewing and filming around the hospital but if there is a scene where it is in a serious environment like surgery it often is brief and hand held. This make the show appear to be very professional as it knows when it is suitable to use hand held cameras. Using proper camera language outside of the sugary scene would make the show look well structured and legitimate from an expert company. If it was filmed hand held it would look very amateur. My film will use similar camera language but take more of a priority on having the footage recorded than presentation of the recording. The likelihood would be that the camera language would worsen as the time goes on as with less sleep i would not be as steady minded and accrete when setting up the camera. This would also allow the audience to see the progression of the deprivation of sleep. Having so much realism in my own documentary would go higher than the hospital Sydney's realism making my own shown more hard hitting to the audience. Also my channel BBC3 is a very popular channel that has over a million views on its most watched this week whilst Discovery Home and Health only got 31 thousand as their top viewing figures of the week. This huge gap between the channels rating would give my a very good chance of beating the rating of this show.

I used this source to find out when i can watch the show
http://www.locatetv.com/tv/hospital-sydney/6255305

Also this link shows why i could not find any recordings of the show online.
http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Watching-Sky-Questions/I-missed-an-episode-of-New-Hospital-Sydney-last-Wednesday-22nd/qaq-p/1139260

Based upon all the shows i have analysed and compared above the best viewing time for my show would be between 8pm and 10pm. All the shows above are aired at these times and because my show might have conflicting with the watershed i would aim to air the show after nine. This would mean all the footage recorded would be allowed to be aired the way it was intended but if it was show a little before 9pm (watershed time) i would bleep out and use cut away to any scene that would be frowned upon by the broadcasters. BBC3 would still be the a great channel to air the show on as it has the target audience that my show would appeal to most, and at approximately 9pm would be a time where my target audience watches the channel the most.

Rationale

5 Key Questions

Who are the experts of Sleep Deprivation?

Doctors are the experts on Sleep Deprivation, but not all doctors. Some doctors specialise in treating people who have trouble sleeping as well as researching the effects of different sleeping patterns and how the lack of sleep will effect a person in the long or short term. The term used for these doctors would be Sleep Specialist. Sleep specialists are medical doctors who have followed out in doing extra education into the field of sleep medicine. Sleep specialists are trained to stop early sighs of sleep lost before it becomes too damaging that it could cause permeant damage. The fields that they speicalise in are neurology, (the section from biology that focuses on organic disorders of nerves and the nervous system) Plumomology, (the medical treatment for dealing with disease involving the respiratory tract) Internal Medicine and Psychiatry (the study of mental illnesses and abnormal emotional and performative behaviour)
It turns out that the sleep experts do not focus on lack of sleep that problems that happen during sleep but they should still have a very wide knowledge of how lack of sleep effects people. One reason this would be true is that they have to help patients that suffer from a sleeping illness call Insomnia. Insomnia is a term use for people who have a hard time to get to sleep or get the amount of sleep they need to feel fully rested. Insomnia is the root of the disorder as there are multiple types of insomnia from having insomnia due to drugs and products that keep people awake, to having insomnia due to mental reasons that are not a choice. Because they would have a vast knowledge of helping people who have a lack of sleep they would know the risks and know how to fix them.

Why do we need Sleep?

The short answer to this question is to restore energy by resting and allowing our bodies to recover from a day of constant work. But the reason that the body cannot recharge while awake as efficiently is because the brain is much more active while awake. This is not proven but is the most agreeable reason why we need sleep. No scientist has giving a solid reason for sleep but we do know what happens without sleep and what benefits we get from sleep, such as being more alert, more athletic and the brain works more efficiently, making us smarter. Some experts has made theories to why we need sleep and have been labeled as so.
Inactivity Theory- This theory is one of the oldest theories of sleep that suggests that the reason animals sleep during the night time and why we do is primal to stay out of harms way when we are most venerable (in the dark) This theory does not fit into todays society as we sleep in places we know we are safe there for sleeping to keep silent and motionless to make predators not notice us is mostly disproved.
The next theory is the Energy Conservation Theory, one of the more logical theories. This theory states that people and animals sleep due to reserving the energy the gain from eating and drinking, taking up less energy would allow them to have more chance to live longer. This is said to be less apparent to developed countries but in polity it would make more sense as they would have limited livestock with food therefor sleeping will use less energy than if they were awake, saving the little energy consumption they have.
The third theory is called the Restorative Theory. This theory believes that we sleep to restore ourselves from what we had lost during the period of time we where awake. This theory does not specify on how we restore as this is still unknown but it is believed that by sleeping in some way the body repairs itself quicker than awake due to the rest that reduces our bodes actions against itself drastically.
The final reason for sleep in a cognitive idea called the Brain Plasticity theory. This theory focuses on the brain and believe that by sleeping it changes the organisation of the brain. This organisation is know as Brain Plasticity. The concept is still not fully understood but studies show that that during sleep the brains patterning changing and could help us understand why we need sleep. The parts of the brain that focus on learning and manual tasks seem to enhance after sleep has occurred making them more equipped for a days work.
In a overview of all the different theories behind sleep there is no solid answer to the question but the ideas can be combined to give a overall view of what sleep does to us and why we may need it during different situations.

What studies have been carried out already about Sleep Deprivation?

There has been several famous studies and personal challages and test to see how long people can stay up without going to sleep.
Peter Tripp during the experiment
The first one is about a radio reporter called peter Tripp who sat in town square for 201hours and 10minites in a glass performing a radio show. At first he was fine and when he started to doze off the nurses and doctors would shake him to wake him up and interact with him to keep him occupied. After a few days he started to hallucinate, seeing mice and kittens that were not actually there. The last 66 hours of the experiment they doctors had to keep him on drugs to keep him from falling asleep. This experiment did massive damage to his well being during and after the test as later on in his carrier he admits that he blames for the 1960's payola scandal as he had never felt quite right since he did the study.

Counteracting this tragic radio attempt of sleep deprivation, a world record holder in 1965 stayed awake for the incredible time of 11night without any resting. This was done by a school boy called Randy Gradner, age 17. During the time he stayed awake he reported as well as the scientist studying him that he began to have slurred speech, blurred vision and mild paranoia. He became weary of the scientist and thought that they thought he was stupid. Once the study was over he only made up for 11hours of lost sleep out of the 90hours he lost. He did not seem to show any side effects after the experiment that questioned the effects of sleep deprivation.
Overall during the studies the short term effects are clearly shown and become horrific but can be fixed in the long term if the person is able to get the sleep they need in the time they can withstand. Pushing over someones personal limits could cause massive long term damage that could rewin someones life, just like Peter Tripp.

What effects does lack of sleep have during Sleep Deprivation? (short term effects)

There are many different symptoms of sleep deprivation that varies depended on the length the person has be deprived of sleep. The lack of sleep has been shown to effect people in physical, metal and emotional level. A quote from Sleepio.com states, "In fact, 88% poor sleepers struggled with reduced energy compared to only 29% 'good' sleepers." This means that the lack of sleep will give you a reduced level in energy that is needed to function the body. The main short term effects are as listed, Anxiety, Drowsiness that can lead to drowsy driving, Forgetfulness, Distractibility making it hard to focus on any given task, Decreased performance and alertness meaning the reaction time is decreased dramatically, Memory and cognitive impairment and Stressed relationships making your emotions get the better of you and more cranky over little things that would usually not be a big deal.

What effects happen after going though Sleep Deprivation? (Long term effects)

The average person can go without sleep for approximately 48hours before it becomes dangerous to a persons health. But soon after the 48hour mark small effects could start that leads on to long term effect the could permanently effect the persons well being. Metal and physical effects can become long term and even create effects that will not be noticeable until much later in life. The most common side effects and the most noticeable side effects are the following. High blood pressure, higher rate of having a Heart attack, a higher chance of having a Stroke during the persons lifetime, Obesity due to eating more from being awake and having a higher metabolism, Psychiatric problems, including depression and other mood disorders, unstable sleeping pattens and overall a Poor quality of life.

How the research as help me in developing my documentary.

The first question i searched information for is who are the experts of sleep deprivation. The results of this question led me to what i though would be the answer but i found out that it specifies on what type of doctor instead of all doctors. This will allow me to try find and interview the sleep specialist doctors instead, giving me a more reliable, trustworthy and legitimate answer to for the start of my documentary where i would tell them about my experiment and they can give me professional feedback and comments that i should take in consideration, this would be recommendation on when i should stop. Also knowing what fields of research they specialise in will give me more understanding on what they will discuss with me during the interview so i don't seem clueless when it comes to them giving me advice. Overall all i really needed from is research was to know who the expert was and i found that out as well as extra information on what they specialise in and what types of treatment they give to different types of problems like insomnia. This question therefore reached my target for the answer as well as giving me useful information that i can use during an interview with a expert. From finding out why we need sleep i did not get any solid answer that is quite annoying but i did find out a lot of theories experts have about why we need sleep and what sleep gives us. The information itself is fairly useful and will help me once again explain during the documentary why sleep is important and what aspects of the behaviour of the participants in my own study will be effected and why. This information links all of the different theories together as well as helping understand some of the side effects i had researched in the later questions. An example of this is with short term effects of needing to eat more and gaining weight this way would be to do with the Energy Conservation Theory where sleeping preserves the eaten food as it doesn't burn off as fast during the period of time you are asleep. Studies have not really given a solid answer to what could happen during my study that i personally think is  good sign as the results are unpredictable but i am aware of the dangers of the test and the limits i should discontinue the test.
