Analyzing the competition

Embarrassing Bodies

This example is called Embarrassing bodies, from Channel 4. It is shown on 4seven at 10:00pm and again on 4more at 11:15pm but mainly airs on Channel 4 on Tuesdays at 8:00pm. The viewing figures for the show in the past week on its main channel, Channel 4 are, 1,290,000 views. This is a huge amount of views for any TV show and mainly has this many due to the channel it is broadcasted on as well as the content of the show itself.

This show is similar to my own as we both focus on the topic of health and medical based advice. The show Embarrassing bodies is about multiple people from the public coming onto the show to see the doctors there to get advice over the embarrassing abnormalities on their bodies. This makes the show seem very personal to the views as members of the public are used. Although this would make the audience feel more connected it might not feel as real as my pro formative mode documentary as i plan to have myself and another person as the topics on the situation, filming ourselves without sleep on hourly intervals. This may also incorporate opinions from others who are effected by the outcome such as family members of mine and my other host. Embarrassing bodies uses a lot of factual sources though out the show and does not give much opinion and uses experts to give trustworthy facts consistently such as at 5:17 of the video shown above. I don't really want my documentary to rely on facts although i do aim to get a segment at the start very similar to this where a doctor will explain the risks, problems and solutions i will and could face during the experiment. This would make my documentary seem much more legitiment and believable as i would be taking part in the situations. Embarrassing bodies only focus on the curing of the problem instead of the way the got the problem too. I plan in my own documentary to focus on filming myself at the start of the experiment all the way though the duration, giving a clear change when i go though the multiple days without sleep. This show uses a lot of graphics with diagrams and words to show the facts of the topic. At 4:00 it uses graphics to explain Endometiosis as well as using a voice over that does most of the explaining. The reason they do this is to keep the viewer engaged during the explanation as well as making a clearer image of the topic. I will be uses very little graphics during my documentary as it would take away the raw footage feel of having a video log every couple of hours during the experiment. I will uses graphics to label the doctor interview as well as the time of each Video log made. This would mostly be done in the bottom left corner of the screen with a clock showing the time with the time in digital shown next to it. I think my show could beat this show in ratings as although both shows will focus on real people and no acting, I feel mine is more compelling to watch as you can see the presenter suffer to endure the situation as personally i think people would find someone going though a difficult challenge more entertaining than people admitting to their embarrassing parts of their bodies. Realistically my should would not be very likely to beat the viewing figures of Embarrassing bodies as it has 1,290,000 views and is aired on a major channel. BBC3 is where i am airing my documentary and BBC3's top viewing figures of the week are 1,187,000 views. It not much of a difference but it very unlikely to beat my own channels most viewed program by over 100 thousand.

MAN V. FOOD (TUE 2032) Dave Ja Vu 87,000 views
Man V. Food is a show based upon a man who set himself a challenge of eating the most ridiculous feasts he can find in america. This show is shown on Dave, but has it highest rating on Dave Ja Vu where it reaches 87,000 views in the past week. It is shown on Dave Ja Vu at 8:32pm. Dave Ja Vu reruns what was shown on Dave in the past hour, meaning it was shown on Dave at 7:32pm.
Man V. Food is not completely linked into my own documentary as Man V. Food is about the food industry while mine is about sleeping and health. The role i linked these together is they both are putting themselves in a dangerous situation to get entertainment to the viewer. My documentary defiantly takes  more serious and darker approach as Man V. Food is purely to entertain the audience instead of giving them much information. The only information the show ever gives about the food is what is in it, how much is in it and where it is from. The Camera language of Man V. Food is very professional with a full staff of camera operators being around to film each event. This makes the show very professional and allows the audience to se the facial expression when the host put himself though the struggling size of foods he eats. My show would not be so professional as the cameras used for my documentary will be easy access camera that would be hand held or resting on a surfaces while i talk to it explaining how i feel or recording my actions. This would make my documentary feel much more real than Man V. Food or at least have a more drastic impact instead of a entertainment impact that i personally think is makes the show more compelling to watch as it has more drama. These would be my main up goal to this show as i believe as my show would be more compelling and contain more realism that would enhance the dramatisation of the show which would make more viewers watch my show that would be show at roughly the same time as Man V. Food. I also notice that the show uses a lot of background music that i would stay clear from as it takes away from the raw footage of the sleepless nights and days. It makes the situation less serious and more entertaining then real.

HOSPITAL SYDNEY (SERIES 7B) (WED 2200)

I could not find a video online of the show but i did find a TV schedule for the show. I watched an episode i could find running on TV and have used my knowledge from watching the show to explain how i feel my documentary relates and would beat the show in ratings.

The show Hospital Sydney is shown on a small channel called Discovery Home and Health at 10pm on a Wednesday. It come in with a total of 31,000 views and is the top rating views on the channel in the past week.

Both Hospital Sydney and my own idea are about health and show in a real environment what happens. Both the show demonstrate realism in a very justifying way as I plan to make my documentary compelling to other not to attempt doing the same experiment i went though and explain the danger of it. Hospital Sydney does the same as getting the doctors to explain that is going on during the procedures and have real footage of sugary, giving the audience a real feel for what the environment is like and how the people must feel being in the room during the operation. An example from the show is shown in the picture above where you can see the team of doctors being suited up for the operation and it gives the audience a sense of realism and hard hitting truth of what is going on. I plan to do the same as i will be showing the audience the hosts going though a tough state where it will most likely have at least a slightly bad effect on their physical and possible emotional well being. The camera language of Hospital Sydney is mostly professional when interviewing and filming around the hospital but if there is a scene where it is in a serious environment like surgery it often is brief and hand held. This make the show appear to be very professional as it knows when it is suitable to use hand held cameras. Using proper camera language outside of the sugary scene would make the show look well structured and legitimate from an expert company. If it was filmed hand held it would look very amateur. My film will use similar camera language but take more of a priority on having the footage recorded than presentation of the recording. The likelihood would be that the camera language would worsen as the time goes on as with less sleep i would not be as steady minded and accrete when setting up the camera. This would also allow the audience to see the progression of the deprivation of sleep. Having so much realism in my own documentary would go higher than the hospital Sydney's realism making my own shown more hard hitting to the audience. Also my channel BBC3 is a very popular channel that has over a million views on its most watched this week whilst Discovery Home and Health only got 31 thousand as their top viewing figures of the week. This huge gap between the channels rating would give my a very good chance of beating the rating of this show.

I used this source to find out when i can watch the show

Based upon all the shows i have analysed and compared above the best viewing time for my show would be between 8pm and 10pm. All the shows above are aired at these times and because my show might have conflicting with the watershed i would aim to air the show after nine. This would mean all the footage recorded would be allowed to be aired the way it was intended but if it was show a little before 9pm (watershed time) i would bleep out and use cut away to any scene that would be frowned upon by the broadcasters. BBC3 would still be the a great channel to air the show on as it has the target audience that my show would appeal to most, and at approximately 9pm would be a time where my target audience watches the channel the most.
