Production Log 6

What progress did you make since your last entry?

I have now completed the project. I imported the music for the interviews, opening segment and sign off segment. I have also lengthened some graphics as there was not enough time to read them perviously. I did a voice over for some of the graphics as the silence was not well fitting with the flow of the documentary. Other than this not much as changed in the documentary and i happy with its outcome.

What logistical challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

I encounter no logistical challenges this week as it was very quickly finished and planned out well..

What techincal challenges did you face this week and how did you overcome them?

I had a very small problem of making a graphic scroll on the editing software but i looked up on the internet a tutorial to do the task i was attempted and quickly found the correct way to do it.

what targets do you aim to acheive before your next entry?

This was the final week so i will not but doing any more updates to the production log.

Production Log 5

What progress did you make since your last entry?

I have nearly completed the entirety of the project now as i finished up with all the editing together and only need to add in some background music and do some tweaks to the footage to improve the quality. I had to remove a large portion of the documentary as the max time allowed as 10 minutes and i ran my documentary for 17 minutes.

What logistical challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

The only issue i faced was the trying to cut down the less imported footage but that was not too hard as i found i have a large section at the start about the 1st day without sleep that was rather boring and pointless to have.

What techincal challenges did you face this week and how did you overcome them?

I am very familiar with the program, Final Cut Express from pervious production, therefor i did not run into any challenges.

what targets do you aim to acheive before your next entry?

The up coming week will be the last week of editing and i will only using a small portion of time next week to add the music and a couple of graphics, and possibly voice overs if any improvements are necessary. This should not take much time to do.

Documentary

production Log 4

What progress did you make since your last entry?

This week i have been in the studio most of the time editing the footage i have. Sadly i have not be able to use all the time i was allocated to the studio as it became occupied during some of my time. Other than this i have been able to work very efficiently. During the time i was sent away i had recored the final parts of the documentary such as the summery and intro. I have also given up on the search for the psychological expert as i have too much footage as it is and it will not effect the documentary too much.

What logistical challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

The only issue i faced was the cancelation of the editing studio. This was not much of a big deal as i still had footage i could recored making the time well used for different parts of the project.

What techincal challenges did you face this week and how did you overcome them?

I am very familiar with the program, Final Cut Express from pervious production, therefor i did not run into any challenges.

what targets do you aim to acheive before your next entry?

Next week i would like to finish all the editing for the documentary as well as adding all music, final graphics and do the voice over for the small sections i am missing.

Production Log 3

What progress did you make since your last entry?

This week i have recored the interviews for the documentary and started to sort though the diary logs on final cut express. I have decided to also record multiple cut aways for the documentary as i did not get any during the study.

What logistical challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
I came across no problems this week as the interviews stayed available and i had no reason to rebook or change any plans.

What techincal challenges did you face this week and how did you overcome them?
There has not been any technical challenges this week luckily, the recording went to plan and most of this week was looking though and sorting out what footage i would use for the documentary.

what targets do you aim to acheive before your next entry?

By the end of the up coming week i would like to complete all my footage recording as well as starting to edit at least the first minute of the documentary.

Production Log 2

What progress did you make since your last entry?

This week i have recored the main part of the documentary, the case study. Hollie Wollaston and myself have recorded several update Vlogs during the time of the experiment showing our behaviour change and how much different our health gets by doing this. We did a stacking cups challenges as well to provide proof of our reaction time getting worse. I have also re-booked an interview with the nurse and GP for next Tuesday. I also got a head start with graphics and have completed the opening warning screen.

What logistical challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

During the week i have still not been able to book an interview with a psychologist, I have emailed and rung up multiple people and they either no not reply, are unable to do the interview or a couple of the them sent me an article about sleep deprevation, stating they cannot attend a interview but the article may help, and forward me to another person who could help. Some of the interview requests are still pending and i will check daily for a reply.

What techincal challenges did you face this week and how did you overcome them?

There has not been any technical challenges this week due to mainly good planning. The mail recording was either set up on a tripod, that hardly moved during the video logs, or hand held due to confidence and location. As the recording was a case study these methods where acceptable to use as it influences the realism of the situation.

what targets do you aim to acheive before your next entry?

By the end of next week i plan to have imported all the case study footage and look though it to pick out what footage i will use for each section in the documentary. I also plan to have completed the interview with GP and Nurse and have that footage also imported. I hopefully will also be able to get all the Voxpops i need for the public montage, and get the interview with the psychologist booked up and set.

Production Log 1

What progress did you make since your last entry?

This week i have finished off completing all of the pre-production work including; the recci for all locations, risk assessments for all the locations, a production schedule to help layout and manage the dates and times of each of the production and post-production days, multiple call sheets for more information on each of the production days and finally a crew list, listing all the members of the crew. By having all this pre-production complete i am ready to set out to record all the footage planned for next week.

What logistical challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

During the week i had been emailed by the psychologist, Mrs Eden, stating that she could no longer take part in my documentary as a client has came up during the time slot we had arranged. Due to this cancelation I no longer have a psychological view point on the topic which is fairly important as it gives the audience the minds role in sleep deprivation from an expert. I have not yet fixed this problems as i have emailed several other psychologist and psychology professors for their participation but i have not yet got a response granting me an interview with any of them. I will carry on though next week trying to resolve this problem.

What techincal challenges did you face this week and how did you overcome them?

There has not been any technical challenges this week as i have not been using any equipment such as cameras and editing programs. Although i had trouble importing pictures of the location for the Recci onto Blogger. To fix this was very simple, as i change from internet explorer to Google Chrome. I do not know how it fixed the problems but it worked. Other than this very small issue i had with Blogger everything else went smoothly.

what targets do you aim to acheive before your next entry?

By the end of next week i plan to have filmed the two interview with the GP and Nurse, as i have booked an interview with them at the Nurse's house on Tuesday. Shown in the Production schedule. After this i also plan to have the case study completed. This would be very important as it is the largest part of the documentary.
A extra, unexpected target is to also find a interview with an expert to give me a psychological approach to the topic. This is quite urgent so i would need to find one as soon as possible.

Recci

Romford Shopping Centre

Romford Shopping centre is going to be used to film the voxpops for the documentary. The reason in which i have chosen this location is because the shopping centre has hundreds of people inside it every day and a lot of the people are of the age range i am interested in interviewing for the voxpop. I will go to this location during the day on a weekend when it is most busy with people, and at night as young adults will be heading out clubbing at this time.

The travel will not cost me or the crew any money as we all have oyster cards that allow us to travel on busses for free. The location is approximately 20 minutes away from our starting location and could go up to 40 minutes if there is traffic. But in the worst case scenario the location is still in walking disdains, making it a reliable and promising location to film a large amount of people.

Bedroom 1 (Male partisipent)

The male participant will be myself and the reason behind using my bedroom as the location of the case study documentary is because it is a realistic location where teenagers would stay up late. I would be fully aware of all hazards and be more comfortable in a environment i am very familiar with. The bedroom is the location the the house a teenager would spend most time, or at least i do personally, therefore i think it would allow the audience to relate to the study more personally as well as making the participant (myself) feel more relaxed in the environment.

As this location is inside of my own house there will be no need to travel, this is very good for me as any far disdains i would have to rely on other people to transport me as i would be taking part in the case study that could have major effects on my reaction time, causing multiple hazard in the street such as crossing the road safely.

Bedroom 2 (Female participant)

The Female participant will be recorded inside her own bedroom for the case study as i said perviously in the male bedroom, it would make the participant feel more relax during the study as well as more aware of all the hazards in the environment they need to be careful of during the experiment. The audience should also get a better connection to the subject at hand as the running theme of bedrooms relates back to the typical location in which teenagers lodge around at their own homes. It also adds the bonus of having a bed in a majority of shots and plenty of cut aways to objects in the room.

As the recordings for the case study is done in a Video log ( Vlog ) style i will not need to be in the location to film the female participant. She will be filming herself resulting in no travel requirements. This makes the production much smoother and easier to capture all necessary footage.

Dining Room (interviews with experts)

The dinning room i will be recording in will be for the house of the Nurse. This was not my original option of location as i would have preferred their office or workspace but as i was asking them out of their own free time they requested that we would film at their house. They still would be wearing their uniform so the higher authority power should still be captured during the interview scenes to make the interview look legitimate and trustworthy. The location is the dinning room of the Nurse's house and the GP will also be interviewed in the same location due to the GP and Nurse knowing each other. This saves transport costs, although there is none. The location is in walking distance of a 15 minute walk from my house.
The layout of the dinning room will be quite fitting as i have a lot of cutaways i could do with the shelfs either side of the table, and the table is nicely centred to lay out the tripod in multiple possession of the interview.

      Narrative Arc

Section 1 - Warning of content

      Jackass Opening Warning section
What- The first section will be a graphic that has a black background with white writing explaining the content in the documentary that could be seen as offensive as well as explaining that there will be strong language. This will also include a big red title in bold saying "WARNING". The whole text wall will be read out by a clear spoken narrator that is not the presenter of the show.  The design and idea is inspired by the Jackass opening section where they do the same warning message, but the host of the show reads it out. The font of the text would be Arial as it is a very clear font to read by anybody. It is also the most commonly used font on the internet with the addition of Times.

Why -This is done to make sure the message is reserved clearly by the audience. This is important to the documentary as it covers the majority of the constraints i would have ran into such as strong language being aired before the watershed.

Who -  No one would be shown in the section but a clearly understood male would do the voice over for the warning reading what is shown on the screen. I will be using John Calvert as my first choice narrator for this section as he has a very clear and understandable voice with good pronunciation of words. If he turns out to be unavailable my back up narrator would be be Mr. A. Philipson who has a strong clear voice that would also get the message across very well.

Location - There is no location for this section as it is a graphic with voice over.

Duration - This message is important and will only be shown as long as the voice over takes to read all the information making the time approximately 10 seconds  long. (0:00 - 0:10)

Section 2 - Introducing the question

What - After Section 1 is complete it will fade to black and fade Section two in. This will be the presenter of the show explaining the study that is about to be viewed and the big question of the documentary, "Whats so important about sleep?" This recording will be done after the study has been completed allowing the presenter (me) to explain with more confidence of the angle and experience what is going to take place in the clips shown soon after. I will finished the section with the a question that the audience can think about during the rest of the documentary. This question could be something like, "How bad is it to have a small amount of sleep?"

Why - This section will quickly inform the audience what the documentary is about and by focusing on explaining the topic and angle is allows multiple questions for the audience to think about during the rest of the documentary.

Who - I am casting myself as the presenter as i want the mode to be participation. I will be best suited to talk about the lack of sleep as i would have went though it not long before the recording of this section.

Location - The first choice in location would be inside of a bed retail store as the environment links with the entire topic of sleep as i would be surrounded by beds left and right.

Duration - This section will discuss the basics of the topic and angle. It will not go in depth with each subsection that will soon follow therefore this should last approximately 20 seconds. (0:10-0:30)

Section 3 - Opening Montage of The youth of today

What - This section will consist start off with a montage section away clip where multiple teenagers are sitting up late on games, computers, mobile phones, clubbing and more. During this short montage i will be explaining how so much of today's youth stay up late and wake up early, reducing the amount of sleep they should get per night, (roughly 8 hours sleep). This will go along with the song, "Get Lucky" by DaftPunk. I will have a low volume while I explain the section then i when i finished talking about how it younger generations are staying up late at night, the song will get slightly louder but not too much. Once the montage is finished it will face into the next section. with me staying, " I went out to find out when teenagers actually go to sleep"

Why - This section is more of an establishing section for the next section. This keeps the documentary interesting and a little more lighthearted as i don't want to come out looking very strongly against or for sleep. I plan to be a neutral party.

Who - As a montage i plan to get a lot of people who are between 16- 20, male and female of all ethnicity. This gives me a large range of people that will get the message across that the majority of teenagers do stay up late. I will be narrating in the background as i am the presenter of the documentary.

Location - There is no location for this section as it contains only voice over and short clips and pictures of teenagers staying up late. These location of the small clips would most likely be in bedroom, their houses or clubs.

Duration - I would like this to last a fairly long time to clearly state the teenagers do stay up late in the UK. Therefore the time on screen would be 20 Seconds (0:30-0:50)

Section 4 - The youth of today

What - This section will contain a vox pop style interview where i would asked 10 to 20 different teenagers of all age, ethnicity and gender to answer the questions to do with their sleeping pattens such as, "When do you usually go to sleep?" or, "How many hours sleep do you think you get?"This would be a fast pasted section that would be filmed in various location i can interview the people such as in houses, the street and where ever i can find people to ask. I would get the interviews from people i know as well as the general public in a shopping centre. In the background i would have faint instrumental music that fits with the tone of the interviews.

Why - This section would back up or my statement in the previous section and the entire point of the documentary, teenagers go to bed late and that they should try get more sleep. This section will prove that they do stay up late, often past midnight as i would predict, therefore giving me more support to my observation.

Who- I would uses the general public for the majority of this as i would actually be conducting solid research the stretches beyond people i know personally, but i would also get a couple of people in the school to interview as they are the age group i am after to interview.

Location - There is no location for this section as it contains only voice over and short clips and pictures of teenagers staying up late. These location of the small clips would most likely be in bedroom, their houses or clubs.

Duration -  Dependent on how many people will appear in the vox pop i would have to dedicate more time into it but as it will be fast past and are very short answers i would dedicate 20 seconds to this section. (0:50-1:10)

section 5 - Sharon Eden Establishing speech

What - From the last section i will first cut to me outside the building where i will be having the interview with Sharon Eden (her office), explaining who Sharon is and what this section of research will be benefiting the documentary. This short segment would be provide what information i am trying to gain from the interview and how it should benefit the case Study later.

Why-  This will give the audience a clear understanding of what the next section will be about. It provides a back-knowlage so when the interview is taking place the audience will understand why this interview was planned and conducted.

Who- I would only have me (the presenter) in the section because i this is planned to be a long short of me explaining where i am and why I'm here, then enter the building, cutting to the next section.

Location - The location for this section would be outside of the Interviewee's work place. This would most likely be outside the building of the office or possibly at her house if she prefers to have it done there.

Duration -  This section should not last long at all as it just establishes the interview in the next section, i therefore gives this around 5 seconds of air time. (1:10 - 1:20)

Section 6 - Interview with Sharon Eden

What - This section will consisted of me and Sharon Eden having an interview about the general risks of sleep and her recommendation before i take part in the study. This section will have the graphic in the left bottom corner showing the audience the label of the interviewee. The camera will uses shot reverse shot, where the camera will jump between the Mrs Eden and myself. I would include a few cut aways so i can sew the interviews together to relevant information.

Why-  This interview is more for me to get the knowledge and tips for the study than actually for the audience, but this would give the audience a better understanding of what i am planning and the expert advice of the study, giving the audience a great understanding and prove that i am taking the study seriously.

Who- Myself the presenter as well as the interviewee, Sharon Eden.

Location - The location would either be in the office of Sharon Eden's or at her house and she decides where the location will be to suit her best.

Duration -  This section is an important section that i would like to be quite long to get a lot of expert advice out of it. therefore it will last around 1 minute (1:15-2:15)

section 7 - Explanation of  case Study

What - For this section i will be talking to the camera in the environment of the study, (my bedroom/house) This will be a short section that explains how what i am going to do during each part of the study shown in the next few sections. I will use multiple graphics on the screen to help explain what i am talking about and possibly animation if i can find some i can use or if i have to to create one myself. The section will hit the following points; What the case study includes, who is taking part, how long the goal and final the rules and conditions of the study.

Why-  This introduction main goal is to establish the any question the audience should have on the case study such as the rules and reason behind certain set ups such as having 1 male and 1 female.

Who- During this section i will be the only person involved with the possibility of having the other case study participant shown.

Location - The location would be inside of my house, preferably the bedroom as it will set the environment for the case study.

Duration -  This section is an brief explanation of the case study but will go into a bit of detail therefore it will last around 30 seconds (12:15-2:45)

section 8 - Day 1 No sleep effects (Male)

What - This section is unpredictable but will be filmed in the style of video log, therefore it will be hand held or put on a still tripod. This would make the footage more real but it would also be easier to record spontaneous moments. I will also possibly have a time-lapse of the entire day in the room if i can set up a camera. The time-lapse would last about 20seconds but then cut into the main video log segments of the day. Graphics will appear in the bottom left corner where it will show the time of day it is and how many hours has past without sleep. I can not mention what will appear in the section as this section is completely observational.

Why-  This is the main part of the documentary that will first hand prove the effects of sleep deprivation as you can see the development though out the section to see how sleep deprivation actually effects a male teenager.

Who- During this section i will be the only person involved as this part only shows the male participant.

Location - The location would be inside of my house, preferably the bedroom as it is the main location for the case study.

Duration -  This section goes over the main parts of the last 24 hours, therefore it will last around 45 seconds (12:45-3:30)

section 9 - Day 1 No sleep effects (Female)

What - This section is practically the same as section 8 as it will contain a observational study using hand help camera techniques, but this one will involve the female participant instead. This section will no include a time-lapse as the male participant is the main part of the study while the female is a side part to compare the results between genders.

Why-  This is the main part of the documentary that will first hand prove the effects of sleep deprivation as you can see the development though out the section to see how sleep deprivation actually effects a female teenager.

Who- During this section i will be the only person involved as this part only shows the female participant.

Location - The location would be inside of the female participants house. But also possibly my house as well.

Duration -  This section goes over the main parts of the last 24 hours, therefore it will last around 45 seconds (3:30-4:15)

section 10 - Day 2 No sleep effects (Male)

What - This section is a follow on from section 8, showing the next day worth of footage recored from the males study. This will contain the same camera techniques and be very similar in convention but the content will hopefully be different, showing progression.

Why-  This is the main part of the documentary that will first hand prove the effects of sleep deprivation as you can see the development though out the section to see how sleep deprivation actually effects a male teenager.

Who- During this section i will be the only person involved as this part only shows the male participant. Also some outside people may be a part of the study such as friends and family.

Location - The location would be inside of the male participants house. But might involve other locations depended on the activities done that day.

Duration -  This section goes over the main parts of the last 24 hours, therefore it will last around 30 seconds (4:15-4:45)

section 11 - Day 2 No sleep effects (Female)

What - This section is a follow on from section 9, showing the next day worth of footage recored from the females study. This will contain the same camera techniques and be very similar in convention but the content will hopefully be different, showing progression.

Duration -  This section goes over the main parts of the last 24 hours, therefore it will last around 30 seconds (4:45-5:15)

section 12 - Interview with Nurse, "Less energetic and Drowsiness"

What - This section will contain a short interview that will explain to the audience why people get drowsy and ways people prevent it such as coffee ext: this will down done very professionally with a tripod at a mid shot. I will uses graphics to explain who the person i am interviewing is and have cut aways to sow the interview together. There might be faint instrumental music but nothing too distracting.

Why-  This is a short segment to explain the previous segments as by 48 hours the two participants should be getting rather tired and it would be wise to explain why and how it can be prevented.

Who- This would be between the nurse, Jillian Wollaston and myself.

Location - I am not in control of the location as it arranged to best suit the interviewee. But the location most likely will be in the nurse's house after hours at her workplace.

Duration -  This section shortly explains the topic of drowsiness and its role with lack of sleep, therefore it will last around 20 seconds (5:15-5:35)

section 13 - Day 3 No sleep effects (Male)

What - This section is a follow on from section 10, showing the next day worth of footage recored from the males study.

Duration -  This section goes over the main parts of the last 24 hours, therefore it will last around 30 seconds (5:35-6:05)

section 14 - Day 3 No sleep effects (Female)

What - This section is a follow on from section 11, showing the next day worth of footage recored from the females study. This will contain the same camera techniques and be very similar in convention but the content will hopefully be different, showing progression.

Duration -  This section goes over the main parts of the last 24 hours, therefore it will last around 30 seconds (6:05-6:35)

section 15 - Interview with GP, "Hallucinations and odd behaviour"

What - This section will be focused on explaining the side effects of sleep deprivation, I have researched that hallucinations and unusual behaviour is a side effect that often kicks in on the 50hour mark. This would mean that it might happen in section 13 and/or 14. The lay out will be over the shoulder shot while interviewing the GP in his office. I will contain multiple cut aways to keep the footage interesting as well as adding in the graphic i have used for the previous interviews to explain who the GP is.

Why-  Having an interview non the less about the topic will explain to the audience what has happened in the last sections and if not, still give them a warning of possible harmful effects.

Who- This would be between the GP and myself.

Location - I am not in control of the location as it arranged to best suit the interviewee. But the location most likely will be in the GP's office when he has some time to spare.

Duration -  This section will briefly explain the role of hallucination and off behaviour, mainly using the case study as reference, therefore it will last around 45 seconds (6:35-7:20)

section 16 - Stop the Study & Why

What - By the end of the 3rd day the case study may be stopped due to the risk of the participants health. When this happens i will be explaining why i stopped the case study and what my experience was like. Overall this would be a summery of the case study and what i personally have learned. This would be done with a mixture of Video log style  filming using close ups and mid shots to capture myself talking to the camera, but also have some footage from the pervious sections when i am talking about certain parts of the study.

Why-  This will make the case study look much more real as i can explain to the audience who it really made my feel and now that i am well rested i can explain what it was like so they don't have to do it themselves.

Who- This would only include me, (the presenter and the male participant)

Location - My bedroom would be most likely location as it fits with where the case study was held in and keep the footage consistent.

Duration -  This section will talk a lot about my overall experience, therefore it will last around 40 seconds (7:20-8:00)

section 17 - Conclusion of the entire documentary (Wrap up)

What - This would be a follow on from section 18 but will be based around the entirety of the documentaries angle and topic. Explain and concluding the final results that i have found out. This would be done very similarly to section 18 therefore the conventions would be similar too, but will contain more motion to make it more professional.

Why-  This nicely wraps up the documentary with a conclusion for the audience that will allow them to know what information they should have gained from watching the video.

Who- This would only include me, (As the presenter0

Location - This will most likely be in the same location as section 2,  a bed retail store, as it nicely tires the story to a close with the beginning question being answered in the same location at the end of the documentary.

Duration -  This section will talk a lot about my overall experience, therefore it will last around 20 seconds (8:00-8:20)

section 18 - Repeat of Warning message Graphic.

What- This section is a complete repeat section 1. At the end of this section the screen will fade to black and end the documentary.

Why -This is done to make sure the message is reserved clearly by the audience. This is important to the documentary as it covers the majority of the constraints i would have ran into such as strong language being aired before the watershed. By repeating this at the end of the film it will ensure they will not forget straight away after watching as it is the last thing they see.

(8:20 - 8:30)
